The technology is kind of hard to explain. Its obviously very complicated, but the concept is not that hard to understand. These guys explain it fairly well - How does 3D TV work?

This is to help understand Jurg and questions from some other users. The 3D technology has been in the entertainment industry since 1955. It was then that they used anaglyph glasses (red and blue) that consumers used to view 3D imagery. The visual spectrum of the image used to be modifed and was able to give the depth because of each eye saw the image from different side of visible spectrum.

The 2nd generation of the 3D technology used active shutter based system that helps to view image through polarized lenses that bring that effect. The active shutter glasses required battery assisted operation that helps to open and close the polarized shutters at high speeds to view the image from two different angles at high speeds. It of course requires active shutter technology based TV to reeive the signals from the eyeglasses.

The most advanced and now being accepted widely by entertainment and consumer electronics industry is the circular polarized based 3D technology. This technology requires the circular polarized based filters in your eyeglasses, like the ones you go to the theaters like RealD. The best advanatge for circ ular polarized based technology is that it will give the same 3D effect even if you move from your place and turn your head sideways. This function is not supported by other technologies. In addition, brands like Sfirex 3D (iCoat - SFIREX) give the 3D technology a premium edge. For premium 3D optics that you get from Sfirex 3D its worth to spend some dollars for a personal premium 3D eyewear that give more than 15% increase in light transmissiong and better 3D optics. The consumer electronics manufacturers are now coming up with circular polarized based 3D laptops and home theater systems, gaming consoles and even new 3D channels are on the rise.

I hope this helps answer some of the questions in this thread.

RealD and other circular polarized solutions are not the standard in 3D TV's right now. All of the major brand name TV's are utilizing active shutter technology. Circular polarized technology will start coming out in 2011.
