What is the thing which makes a film popular?

What do you guys think that what was the reason behind the success and failure of a film? Is it a good story or a good marketing?

Marketing is must.i have seen many great films not becoming hit due to lack of marketing.
But of course story and concept of the movie is the deciding factor .

Its the story line and the logic behind the story. This is very important in a movie and also the way he express the story in the picture is also the next important thing.

I think everything from direction, acting, storyline, marketing matters a lot for a success of a movie.A movie cannot succeed without all these well done.

Many say it is the story line which is needed to make a film popular. But normally i will say as a film will be popular only because of its actors. You can see that a famous actor acting in a film will be a hit but if we take the same film with a new face it wont be a hit comparitively.

It's important to have a great story, great directing, great effects and then support that with great marketing.

I think no amount of good marketing can salvage a bad story. This is proven sometimes by low-budget films that make it big because they had stories that people loved so much they recommended it to all their friends.

Other factors that could help a movie become successful are:
    1. if the movie is an adaptation from a popular book or comic book
examples: harry potter, x-men, spiderman, iron man...

    2. if a movie targets the general crowd.
example: comedy and adventure films, like Shrek, Toy story and Monster, Inc.

    3. sometimes (as in, not all the time) famous actors can stir interest in a movie, too.
    example: Kung Fu Panda.
People probably took first notice of it because it had the voice talents of Angelina Jolie, Jack Black, Lucy Liu, Jackie Chan and Dustin Hoffmam.

a decent script , you dont wanna go watch something and all the characters say is "hi , want go fish" that would be boring , you also want something unique and not done before
